How Do I Record On Traktor Pro 3: Master the Club-Grade DJ Workflow

Recording in Internal Mixer Mode in TRAKTOR Set the Mixing Mode to Internal in the Output Routing tab of the TRAKTOR Preferences. In the Mix Recorder Preferences, set the Source to Internal. Open the Audio Recorder Panel in TRAKTOR's Global Section. ... You can now start your recording by hitting the Record button.

It is super helpful when recording a live set where you may turn up and down the volume as the size of the crowd varies. These volume changes will be heard in the recording if you record using the Master 2, whereas the REC OUT will keep the volume consistent.

Using an external recording is a great way to record your mix however you will then need to take the recording from the SD Card or internal memory and put it on your computer to be edited and uploaded.

However, we can skip this step if we recoded directly into our computers or smartphones. Recording into your phone is a straightforward way to manage your recordings with the help of some dedicated apps.

The Pioneer DJM REC application is a fantastic utility that allows you to record, track split and upload or stream your mic directly from the USB port found on Pioneer mixers. You can see our full review of the application below. Our only criticism is that it only works with a handful of mixers.

You can record your set directly to your computer, even without performing on DJ software. Using an external sound card or by connecting to the sound cards found inside some high-end DJ mixers, we can record using free audio software. We recommend using Audacity or Garage Band.

Failing this, you can pick up cheap USB sound cards from as little as 25 with the Behringer U-Control UCA202 models being prevalent. For all these devices, the correct drivers must be installed, and the REC OUT/Master 2 feed needs connecting to the line-level input on the sound card. From here, make sure you select the sound cards as the recording source in your software of choice.

Another technique is to create a mix using two decks in TRAKTOR, and layer in the vinyl on top of this. If you want to avoid mixing in another digital file into the vinyl record, mix the vinyl channel out and let the two Deck mix in TRAKTOR play.

If you intend to use the same Deck to play both vinyl and digital files, be sure to check the Phono/Line/USB selector switch on the mixer channel is set correctly. For example, set the switch to Phono when you play a vinyl record and set the switch to USB (or Line, depending on your setup) if you want to play a digital file. Be sure to double check this setting before you mix in a track!

Another idea is to connect either one or two turntables to the KONTROL S4 and use channels C and D on the controller to play digital tracks in TRAKTOR. Channels A and B can be used to play vinyl, since these are the only two channels that offer Phono inputs. Have your friend mix in their vinyl record and then mix in another track in TRAKTOR. A jam session like this can be a great way to keep your beat matching skills sharp, especially if you usually using sync.

The level of the audio recording can be controlled with the GAIN knob. Make sure that the level does not go into the red.To start and stop recording, click on the record button in the lower left corner of the Mix Recorder. The recorded files will appear in the Audio Recordings node of the TRAKTOR Browser. The recording path on your hard drive can be set in Preferences > Mix Recorder > File > Directory and can be changed to any location you desire.

To record pure digital you need an A/D converter (Analog to Digital), unless your souncard has a phono input and do the conversion internally. Otherwise your recording will be analog. You see, the final file will be a digital file (wav, aiff, flac, mp3), but the recording itself will be an analog one, because a vinyl record is an analog recording!

Either way, just plug your turntables to an audio input of your soundcard, do the necessary adjustments and... hit the Record button! ? Things can be as simple as that, but for top quality here is a good guide for Pro recording. Good luck!

For example, in Logic Pro, if you want to use the MacBook Pro microphone and it's assigned as channel one in Audio MIDI Setup, choose Input 1 from the input slot of the channel strip you're using to record.

The above was my first attempt at recording. Notice that the sound signal consumes the entire area. I was basically throwing too much signal at the port and it translated there is full volume of a really poor quality sound almost 100% of the time.

After reducing the master volume down to 10% of capacity and recording again, the above waveform was produced. This is better as we actually see grey space (less than 100% volume) but the peaks are all at maximum, so clipping is still occurring.

The above picture shows you what happens when your recording setup is done properly. Notice that the waveform never hits maximum volume. There are distinct peaks and valleys but the signal is clean and is not clipping.

The Audio Recorder panel is located in top right of Traktor. (If you can only see FX knobs, click the two-circle icon below the FX tab to switch to the recorder panel.) Gain is the knob next to the broadcast and record buttons.

With recorded audio, it's easy to bring the volume back up during mastering, but it's impossible to fix clipping when it got too loud. I've found that this Gain knob uses minimal signal processing, so it's the only one that's safe to use without getting a muddy-sounding recording.

I like to reduce the recording gain to -3.0 dB because it's not too much of a reduction and leaves me wiggle room for mastering. It's also the average amount of gain boost that Traktor adds when analyzing tracks, so it balances that out when necessary.

Headroom is similar to a limiter in that it cuts your recording volumes down in -3dB steps. Unfortunately, this processor reduces the volume on-the-fly in real time using the the main audio signal, so it doesn't have time to be selective.

Since mp3s are already compressed and then reprocessed while you mix, one more layer of compression just adds mud. Worse, the compression only affects the recording and not your main output, so you won't know if it worked until you play back the recording.

Alternatively, you can find microphones that attach directly to your smartphone at an even lower price point. The Shure MV88, for example, conveniently plugs into any iPhone. With your own recording studio in your pocket, you can record effectively and save cash without compromising on quality.

The loop recorder will record sound coming from a number of different sources. You first have to make sure you select the source you want to record from. As mentioned, we will record from the cue. Setting the loop recorder to cue, will record anything that is sent to the cue channel. In other words anything with the cue button activated (this is usually used to listen to a track in the headphones, whilst mixing it in).

In the header of the remix deck you will see a section that enables you to change the load location, from deck A, to deck B, or to the loop recorder. You need to change this to the loop recorder in order to capture a sample from a location. Once this is set correctly simply pressing one of the sample buttons on deck C of the S4, will load the sample into that related cell. You should now do the following:-

Audio Evolution Mobile is the leading multitrack audio and MIDI DAW on Android. You can enable USB audio by doing an in-app purchase or by purchasing USB Audio Recorder PRO. Without in-app purchase, the app lets you test your USB audio interface/mic by limiting the recording time.

Hint: for most reliable recording, put your device into 'Airplane' mode and shut down as many tasks as possible. Please also disable any battery saving mode if present. Currently, USB Audio Recorder PRO and Audio Evolution Mobile have to run in the foreground, so do not switch to other apps during recording or playback since background apps only get limited cpu time and some Android device halt USB signals.
