Unique women trying valiantly to carry on their life in the midst of a complicated world. There are a lot of factors at work in this film, and many I'm sure I did not totally understand due to my own ignorance of much of the cultural context. But these women come through as bright and brilliant characters, outcasts but unwilling to allow that to dictate their lives.
Film Algerien X Biyouna
It's surprisingly empowering while showing the tragic effects of overreaching political power at the same time. The entire film takes on bittersweet tone as well, as even the various victories or achievements come with a stiff price.
Oh, those films about three women in contemporary Algeria. We got the plaintive piano. Got the charming Algiers cityscapes. Got the story I can't quite follow. But there's some pretty people and some dancing. Goucem's our heroine; Papicha is her mother (Biyouna is a famous Algerian singer, ça va?); and Fifi is her gal pal, a prostitute. (Like OR (MY TREASURE)? except not as tragic.) They all live in Pension Debussy, a hotel in downtown Algiers. (Like YANA'S FRIENDS? except not as zany.) 2ff7e9595c
